Easy Mark
Suffice it to say that I use the word “mark” here to describe someone who is easily influenced or easily persuaded to change his or her opinion or belief about a matter.
Yesterday morning I was down at the Courthouse on Jury Duty. I get to go pretty often (about as much as the law allows) for some reason, though I should have a permanent exemption because I NEVER get chosen for a jury.
I did have the opportunity to sit through a “jury questioning” time. Both attorneys concentrated on a single question, asking almost everyone one of the twenty potential jurors if they thought a certain way about the issue at hand. It was almost unanimous (with the exception of a couple of others and myself) in the affirmative and most expressed their feeling with strong conviction. Within a very few minutes, however, almost everyone of them had been convinced to change their mind (and/or feelings) regarding the issue.
I was surprised (even though I should not have been) that it was so easy to persuade someone to abandon what they “believe” and replace it with a new belief — simply on the basis of some one’s argument.
It reminded me of all those believers who are “blown about by every wind of doctrine.”(Ephesians 4:14) We must be certain of what we believe, and never allow the enemy to “blow” us off course with the cunningness of his argument. The Truth never changes, never bows to the intellectualism of man, and never violates the conscience. Know what you believe and stick to it!
