Get ’em While They Last
I have coveted a Humvee for many years, and toyed with the idea of buying a Hummer. The problem (not considering the price – which is way out of my reach) was that they were clean and shiny with lots of chrome and polish. People bought them to drive on highways and park in concrete driveways. I wanted one for the woods, dirt, mud, mountain climbing, and river crossings of which my dreams are made. I want the “old” style in Army green or camouflage – not crimson with ivory accents and “real wood” interior trim. I am convinced that was the original intent of building the machine – deep mud and nearly forgotten mountain trails.
Well, here is the latest news from Associated Press – John Smith, GM vice president of corporate planning and alliances said, “GM will now work closely with Hummer employees, dealers and suppliers to wind down the business in an orderly and responsible manner.”
If you’re going to get one, now is the time. I think I will, get one that is, if the price drops below $5,000.
Have you notice that people sometimes use the Church in a manner that doesn’t fit with the original intent? We have shined it up, taken away all the difficult Truth, and tried to make it palatable to our sinful society so that we could fill up our huge buildings and maintain our massive budgets. Just as the Humvee was not created for concrete highways, the Church was not formed to conform to our wishes and desires. Rather it was designed as a place where the llove of God would change people radically, shift our attention from Earthly to Heavenly things, and drive us toward a llove for one another that the World would neither accept or understand.
I have this sense that I will never own a Humvee or a Hummer. But I do have The Church, God’s family, and the llove I know there is beyond imagining. I can live without the former.
