I’ve Lost It
What? You might ask. My interest in what passes for “great” entertainment, I guess.
I turned on the TV last night to Fox 4 approximately 8 or 10 minutes before nine. I was waiting for the 9pm News (which didn’t come on till several minutes after nine). What I found was American Idol. It was about the time Janet Jackson took the stage, which was subsequently followed by Joe Cocker. Stars? Jackson looked ridiculous and if what she was doing is “music,” well, I don’t need any. Then came Cocker. He must be nearly as old as me. I am sure (well I am not sure) I have not heard him before. Whatever that was he did, I don’t need to hear it again.
Then, the News (Fox News at Nine) was “no news all the time, only a rehash of American Idol” and the constant repetition of how the “stars” had “ruled the night,” especially Jackson and Cocker. Is that what “music” has come to in 2010? The guy who won American Idol has a good voice, and the one or two of his songs that I heard this year were pretty good, but if that “star” thing is where he is headed – well back to the paint department, I say.
I llove “Church Music.” But I have an appreciation for all real music too. I enjoy classical, jazz, lots of “show” tunes, Dion, Streisand, Johnny Mathis, Elvis, and Willie. But an awful lot of what passes for music now, is, in my opinion, noise and foolishness.
Yeah, I’m old. But let’s be honest – if it weren’t for “peer pressure,” most folks wouldn’t think much of most of the “noise” either.
