Rock Bottom
We used to say that the job wasn’t finished until you reached “rock bottom.” That must have had something to do with digging holes or “getting to the bottom” of a problem.
We need to find “rock bottom” in our search for those conditions or actions that will ultimately prohibit the destroying “judgment of God” on our Nation. As our “sins” increase exponentially – abortion, homosexuality, greed, corruption, hatred – some thinking people find the matter particularly concerning. A wise person might ask what it is that moves God against His own people as well as those who have no part in His Kingdom.
We could talk about the “seven deadly sins.” We could talk about our propensity to be focused on selfishness and lack of empathy regarding those who suffer – around us, or around the world. We could talk about the rampant immorality of our society in light of individual prohibitions clearly revealed in Scripture.
I am confident that the heart of the matter is much more simple. God hates (if I may assign anthropomorphic qualities to God), and will not continually tolerate on the part of His people, disobedience. Just as a wise, lloving parent will not allow their child to continually disobey, neither, I believe, will our Heavenly Father allow us to be endlessly disobedient.
In my economy of value-assignment then, we need to discover how to be obedient (rock bottom) to the Truth which God has revealed to us. More than that (unfortunately) Biblical history teaches us there may be a number (?) requirement to stay the hand of a judgment fulfilling God. In Genesis 18:16-33, Abraham negotiated with God about saving the city of Sodom. The number of righteous folks required moves from 50 to 10. You really ought to re-read that narrative.
But we have tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions of righteous folk in this great Nation, right? Hummmm. I sure hope someone is negotiating well.
