Surely – You Jest
I must have reached that age in life when it seems odd to me that people need public (as opposed to parents “wising-up” their kids) warnings for activities that are problematic. Here’s an example –
LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical Writer CHICAGO – Have you ever worked on your laptop computer with it sitting on your lap, heating up your legs? If so, you might want to rethink that habit. Doing it a lot can lead to “toasted skin syndrome,” an unusual-looking mottled skin condition caused by long-term heat exposure, according to medical reports.
And I need help with this problem? Surely, you jest!
Along with stories in today’s news about the problems among teens – including lack of supervision, drugs, alcohol, “unwanted” pregnancy, and school dropouts – comes my question: what has happened to wise parents teaching their kids to be wise in handing life as it comes rushing toward them in a society that condemns drunkenness but promotes alcohol like it is the greatest pleasure one can experience, abhors unwanted pregnancy but fills every nook and cranny of life with sexual promiscuity and sensual thinking, and allows discipline to languish in obscurity until we slam kids into jails and prisons.
While America has produced bigger paychecks, larger houses, fancier automobiles, and unlimited creature comforts, we have often abandoned pure hearts, sober thinking, and righteous judgments. Our problems as a society are a composite of our problems individually, and we are experiencing the social failures indicative of a lack of personal morality.
There is an answer, of course. The question of the day, and every day, is are we interested in hearing it? Actually, I think not. And that, in my opinion, is our most compelling error.
