Warning Signs
It is not unusual to hear calls for “warning signs.” It is equally not unusual to see folks ignoring those sign which already exist.
Yesterday’s tragedy in Ft. Worth, Texas is a prime example of such a call. Under the picture in the newspaper of a low-water dam in the park where a man drowned were these words – “A man drowned Monday at this low-water dam in Trinity Park after his wife and foster daughter fell in. Some residents want warning signs posted.” (Ft. Worth Star-Telegram)
The question from my perspective is this – Who would pay attention to the signs if they were there. A wise adult will recognize danger, sign or not, and a child would probably not even notice a sign, assuming they can read it.
Accidents happen – signs or no signs. Almost any parent would have jumped into the water in an attempt to save their child, regardless of the danger. While the child was saved, unfortunately the parent was lost.
I can’t help but be reminded of the “signs” which warn of so many dangers especially for young people. Drugs, alcohol, careless use of automobiles, speeding motorcycles, broken curfews, casual sex, lax discipline – all of which produce signs of great danger. Yet responsible adults – parents, teachers, counselors, etc., often ignore the signs – and tragedy is not far behind.
God built into each of us a constant warning sign – the conscience. It is a window through which His warnings are clear. Ignoring it until it is opaque is easy, but accompanied by great peril. Listen to/see the warnings – if you can still hear/see them. Then check the guidebook for the safety rules.
