Thought For The Day

Deacons

I’ve never been a Deacon. I was asked once, but failed during the questioning part to get the answers right and they rejected me.

Last night our Church ordained three men as Deacons. Our pastor talked of their qualifications and job description, and it made me think again about how important that job is, and how, really, all of us could do a better job if we would just act like Deacons, even though we are not ordained to be Deacons.

Our pastor said Deacons are those who are CHOSEN by God and the Church to a select duty. That duty, of course, is to be a servant to the Body of Christ. I can do that too.

He said Deacons are those who are COMMITTED to the task. The responsibility calls for great men, and great men call for the responsibility. They are entrusted with a vital ministry. I am too.

He said Deacons are people who CARE for others. Bearing one another’s burdens, being kind, tenderhearted, forgiving, and comforting, are all part of the responsibility of being a servant to the family of God. I must do that also.

He concluded his remarks by reminding the Deacons that they must be CONSISTENT. Perseverance means never giving up, always praying, caring, giving, and working. I know I need to be like that as well.

I am confident I will never carry the title of Deacon. And that is perhaps as it should be. But I am going to make every attempt as a person chosen by God, to be committed to my role as a responsible member of the family, taking time to care for those around me by every means possible, and be one who consistently displays obedience to the Truth of God’s revealed Word regarding my work in the Body of Christ.

Who knows, maybe someday I’ll be mistaken for a Deacon.
