Is “Believing” Real Christian Faith?

President Obama has stated clearly that he is a “Christian.” While I am one that takes people at their word, I watch (some folks, no individual can watch everyone) to see if their “walk” coincides with their rhetoric.

Religion and Ethics Newsletter carried this paragraph: Kim Lawtonreports on all the faith-based events tied to the inauguration and how the Obama administration is likely to interact with the religious community as the new presidency moves forward. “I think that President Obama really is grounded in his personal faith,” notes Reverend William Sinkford with the Unitarian Universalist Association. “I think he values the religious voice. I think it is wise of him to bring in a broad spectrum of that religious voice.”

These words from a man who represents a religion that believes everything and nothing, and certainly has nothing in common with genuine Christianity, does not give me much hope. Saying one is a Christian when one fails to embrace the sanctity of life, the Biblical model of sexual behavior and family, and has reportedly said that it was the “African-American Church which transformed him from a skeptic (read: unbeliever) to a believer,” appears to misunderstand that the only transforming power moving one from death to life is the power of the Cross of Jesus Christ, i.e. His death, burial, and resurrection, which is the Gospel of the redeeming llove of God.

I think I’ll watch more closely and a bit longer, if you don’t mind.
