Thought For The Day

Mountain Climbing

One of my sons lives in a Condo overlooking the city of Portland, Oregon. From his living room, through a huge window, one can see Mt. Hood clearly and beautifully in the near distance. I have been to Timberline lodge several times and I have skied Mt. Hood Meadows. I have never wanted to climb higher.

I read with sadness about the climbers who are lost there, probably dead (one body already recovered), who apparently took every precaution to plan and execute their trip for a safe return. Somewhere, something went very wrong. The truth is, no matter how prepared one is, there is great danger – weather, equipment failure, mistakes induced by altitude, conditions, health – and the reality of the risks is never far from the mind of those who venture to the mountain tops.

So it is with life. There is much danger, and the ever present reality that the Enemy will do everything within his power to damage and destroy. With that in mind, I am amazed that many of God’s children do not surround themselves with the relative safety, security, and wisdom of the Church. Even there, much like in the mountains, things can and do go wrong. But given even that, why would anyone not utilize the knowledge, wisdom, expertise, and support that is a part of the Body of Christ as we make this hazardous journey through life?

Just as those who aspire to the mountain tops of this world need certain things to make the journey safely, so you and I need the support, care, ministry and llove of God’s people as we aspire to mature in The Faith.

Christmas is a good time to check in with your local group of Believers. So is any other time.
