Thought For The Day

Real Music

My experience with music concerts, other than those that occur in Churches, is limited. Several years ago I took my bride to see Celine Dion at the American Airlines Center. That lady can sing! We saw Roy Clark once (years ago), one of the most accomplished musicians ever.

Continuing our R&R for an additional day or two, we attended a music concert. And I have to confess, I was “blown away.” When we were teen-agers (my bride and I) had a favorite singer, and we chose one of his songs as “our song” when we were contemplating marriage. Over the intervening 52 years we have heard it many times by our “favorite” singer, and by others as well. I have even been known to sing it to her (my bride) myself. Roger sang it at our last anniversary (50th).

Well now many of you know. We heard Johnny Mathis. . .and along with one and one-half hours of other songs. . .he sang The 12th of Never. Johnny is getting older now (born in 1935 in…can you believe it, Gilmer, Texas) but certainly not less impressive. His presence was strong, and his voice as incredible as ever. It was worth the trip and the cost, no questions asked.

I wonder why so many Believers give up on their calling, their spiritual gifts, their commitment to the Church of Jesus Christ, long before they reach that age? I know some folks are not healthy, but the reality is, lots just drop out of the action long before they have to. There are others who keep plugging away, doing what they have always done, and they are a joy to me and the folks to whom they minister. We must thank God everyday for their example.

I suppose I have a growing affinity for older people. I know one thing – they are where the experience lies, and are the source of great wisdom. Johnny Mathis proved that to me last night. In my opinion, for what he does. . .He was the best 50 – 60 years ago! He still is!

I sometimes wonder why we think so much about age differences; is there is any real difference in a 100 year old person vs a one year old person when compared to eternity? Not that there is not wisdom with age.
