Thought For The Day

Surely Not!

In a Fort Worth, TX Star-Telegram article by Lee Williams I read the following:

On Tuesday, [Texas] State Fair officials released the eight finalists for this year’s fifth annual Big Tex Choice Awards, and on the list is this gem: Deep Fried Butter. It’s exactly as it sounds, butter that’s seasoned, battered up and deep-fried.

That could not possibly be good for you! I have seen kids eat butter by the spoon-full, but we usually grow out of that kind of foolishness. Chicken fried bacon I understand, but butter?

How true it is that some of us can’t stop doing those things which are really harmful to our life, and often, to those around us. One would think that the time would come when we would learn to stop our mouths not only in relationship to what goes in, but certainly stop some of the things coming out.

The Scriptures talk extensively about our words, and how they hurt and damage others. Corrupt communication is a problem in the Church of Jesus Christ, and it needs to be controlled by the power of God’s Spirit residing within us.

Just as you would think twice about downing a huge glob of fried butter, think twice regarding what you are about to say. Is it true? Does it edify the hearer? Will it hurt someone? My momma used to say, “If you can’t say something nice (good), don’t say anything at all.” That’s still good counsel.
