Thought For The Day

There Goes the Coke Machine

Don’t tell the Pastor, but we have a soft-drink/candy/chips machine over by the Youth Room. I am told that the Adult class members near the same area are frequent purchasers.

Since we are committed to the “very best” of everything for our people, we now have a moral dilemma. Are we going to continue to place in jeopardy the lives of those who “buy” from us?

In an article published today in the journal PLoS, researchers argue that soda companies are using clever marketing strategies to distract consumers and regulators from the fact that their products have been implicated in rising rates of obesity, diabetes and other chronic diseases. (ABC News)

I guess I don’t get it, but why do the “health police” go after the soda companies and the candy makers, and the “sugar additives” producers? Why not just outlaw the production of sugar. Seems like a simple solution. Classify sugar as an illicit drug, prohibit it’s production or importation, and criminalize its use.

Or perhaps, we could all just learn a bit of discipline. While diabetes seems to visit people who aren’t “sugar addicts,” and I would imagine there will always be “chronic diseases” that are not sugar related, obviously obesity is totally sugar related (you can eat a hundred pounds of turkey and dressing a day and you won’t gain a pound).

It seems more logical and Biblical that we should be wise in taking care of our bodies (excellent diet practices, exercise, plenty of prayer and Bible Study along with consistent Church attendance) so that we will have greater opportunity to rejoice in the blessings of God as opposed to the dangers of this World system.

I don’t claim to be an example ( though I have stopped drinking sodas), but I don’t want to put the blame for everything that happens on something/someone else when I have the power to control many of the circumstances surrounding my health. I am confident God wants me to be wise. . .and lloving. Too much sugar – I can (“could” might be a better word here) do without.
