Thought For The Day

Truth? Truth!

In a commentary written today (6/6/12), Walter Shapiro (Yahoo News, and a special correspondent for the New Republic) makes an interesting, but confusing, statement.

The secret to political leadership—whether as a governor or in the Oval Office—is to trust the voters with the truth.

The commentary is made in relationship to the recall election in Wisconsin. He opines that the Governor failed to reveal to the voters of Wisconsin his entire agenda before his election some 17 months ago.

It’s an interesting proposition – this business of “revealing Truth.” Whether it is in politics or medicine, finances or theology, I am convinced a significant percentage of the World’s population is not really looking for the Truth.

Truth is demanding. Truth is inescapable. Truth is immutable. Truth is often at odds with what we “think” and how we “feel.”

For example, what is the truth regarding General Motors alliance with China? What is true regarding the impossibility of maintaining Social Security as it is constituted? What is the truth regarding the economic future of any Nation that has more “outgo” and “income?” What is true regarding the “Church” and its movement toward “easy believe-ism,” ecumenicalism and tolerance? Is it true that  dark spot is actually cancer?

At least a few people in this World have a mindset toward maintenance of their personal lifestyle and the issue they are least willing to confront is Truth.

Maybe Colonel Jessep had it right (A Few Good Men, 1992 movie with Jack Nicholson) when in response Lt. Kaffee’s (Tom Cruise) statement, “I want the truth!,” he answers, “You can’t handle the truth!”

I suppose we are all sure we can – but, check out how much Truth you ignore by simply willing it from your mind with apathy, ignorance, and endless distractions.
