Thought For The Day

Unbelieving Believers

This morning (Sunday, April 1) the Pastor at our Church talked about “unbelieving Believers.” He told us Thomas, the Disciple of Christ, was really close to being the first one after the resurrection. Thomas had that problems that so many of us tend to experience  – “I will believe it when I see it.” Sometimes we call him “doubting” Thomas, but that is probably the wrong word for us. He just could not believe that Jesus of Nazareth was no longer dead, as opposed to  alive and wandering the countryside again – but this time in a resurrected body, and with a completed task, and soon to return from whence He came.

Our Pastor told us there are more like him in Scripture. . .and more like him every city, town, and burg in these United States. Churches have a host of folks who just can’t believe beyond the reality that Christ died for the unGodly, redeems those who believe, and is currently preparing a place for those who do, where we can live with Him in His home, which we call Heaven.

Their struggle is in believing that each one of us who believe is predestined to a life of holiness, worship, sharing our faith, and living each day in victory over the dramas and traumas of life on this planet. People believe God lloves them, but stop short of understanding that His llove is sufficient to empower them for the tasks to which we (individually and collectively as “the Church”) have been called.

When Jesus walked on Earth some 2000+ years ago, He said, “Be holy, even as your Father is holy” (1 Peter 1:15). “You shall be witnesses unto me. . .” (Acts 1:8). “You will overcome. . .” (1 John 4;4).  Well, I could go on (and on, and on, as the Pastor does) but you should be getting the idea that belief (faith, if you will) is a gift from God that often goes unsung, unused, and uninteresting to many of God’s children.

Jesus said to Thomas (the Disciple who walked with Him on Earth), “Don’t be an unbeliever, but a believer” (John 20:27).
