Thought For The Day

Dumb Play?

I understand these lloveletters notes are supposed to be about things that really matter – but then, football really matters to some folks.
I watched the Dallas Cowboys game on Sunday, and was frustrated, angered, sad, disappointed. . .need I go on? But Randy, give it a rest!
Move over Barry Switzer. If “Load Left” from 1995 was the dumbest offensive play calling decision in Cowboys history, then at the very least, Jason Garrett now shares the low moment for all-time brain lock. (Randy Galloway, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram)
If I were a football coach (and I guess everyone can recognize why I am not) I would coach every down as if it were the Super Bowl, and my team was on the one yard line with three seconds to go in the last half with my team down by six. And yes, every once in a while our defensive line, as a whole, would beat the “count” and knock the offensive line on their. . .backsides – just so they would know we are still there, and we’re coming for you – what is that penalty – five yards, ten yards – who cares!
Why would we ever “take a knee?” (Except to keep from winning by more than 100 points). Would we go for it on fourth down and one – every time we are past the fifty – yes! If the team can’t get a yard, they need more work, more practice, more guts, or take your whipping like a man.
Now, I am not going to mention that this particular play (on Sunday against Washington) was a perfectly good play (then again, maybe I am). Yes, there was a fumble, and yes, it afforded a touchdown for the opponent. So? That potential exists on EVERY play. No fumble, no problem – in the locker room down by three, and a little rest before the next half.
Garrett called a play (I assume). The opportunity was there for a really long, over the top, exciting touchdown – just like there is on lots of plays in every game. Of course, then Garrett would be a hero, wouldn’t he? This play didn’t break the game – no one play ever does.
BTW, life is like that. Sometimes things go badly – and sure, someone is at fault. But God allows “do-overs.” So you fumbled this one. . .get up, get going, get it right, and WIN.
