Thought For The Day

Guns and Booze

The end is known. Booze and guns are not going to be sold at gun shows in Texas. I am onboard with that. I suppose it is because there is a belief among some (maybe most) people that people using guns and alcohol at the same time is not exactly safe. I have always thought that to be true.

Of course I have never thought people using cars and booze at the same time is safe. We don’t seem as a society to have nearly as big a concern about that. If you can’t sell a drink to someone who is buying a gun (with or without ammo), why don’t we make a law that you can’t sell booze to someone who is driving (using) a car. . .or riding in a car for that matter. While I suppose those two are not exactly the same thing, why would one ever assume that all those cars surrounding a bar, tavern,  or a late night New Year’s eve party, for example, will be driven away by designated drivers and abstainers?

When the death of people by drunk users of firearms exceeds the death of people by drunk drivers, I will need to rethink my proposal. In the meantime, maybe some lives could be saved.

The Scripture says that, “Wine is a mocker, beer is a brawler, and whoever staggers because of them is not wise.” (Proverbs 20:1) If there is such a thing as a “Biblical understatement,” that might be it.
