Thought For The Day

Have A Holiday

Today (February16th) is President’s Day. Well, actually it is a celebration of George Washington’s birthday, with some folks adding in President Lincoln. But then, for others, it is a celebration of all those who have served as President of the United States up to and including the now sitting (or is that standing) President. I know that because he took his “first” holiday or vacation over this long week-end (after all he has been working hard for 25 days).

Over the years the dates and reasons for this “day off” have changed several times. In fact, I am not sure anyone knows what we are celebrating, or whose birthday we are celebrating, but we know for sure that the Feds aren’t working, and I think, neither should we.

In fact, I think we ought to find a “worthy” person born on each day of the calendar year, and make each one a Federal holiday. Then, everyone who wants to could pick, say, 100 of the holidays to take the day off — schools, banks, the Post Office, businesses, Wall Street, etc., you get the idea. Certainly not much would be accomplished, but I wonder if we wouldn’t be better off.  On their holidays Congress wouldn’t pass any stupid legislation, banks wouldn’t fail, the Post Office would not lose and/or damage mail, and e-mail would be “king for the day.” Public schools would have fewer days to fail to produce smart kids, and there would be fewer business operations open everyday where we often waste our money.

I think I am liking this idea. A hundred holidays! That’s like 40-50 Monday’s off.  Throw in a couple of Thursday/Friday two-fers, and we’re looking good.

People could even choose a few Sunday’s to skip Church – never mind, too late.
