Thought For The Day

Life Going By

The building where the Church I attend meets sits on a fairly busy State Highway. Looking out the front door on Sunday mornings I see all sorts of things passing by. We are right between two State Parks and I see a lot of RV’s headed in both directions. We are just a few miles from one of the best known 4X4, four-wheeler parks in the State so I see a lot of dirty machines on trailers. . .and super clean ones headed for the mud. There are lots of cars, even a hiker or two, and sometimes walkers who are just passing by on their way down the road a piece or on their way back. Horse and cattle trailers are common, and, of course, as everywhere, lots of 18 wheelers.

I can’t help but wonder why none of these folks look like they are headed for Church. Some of the cars may be, but generally, most folks don’t take their toys or equipment with them to Church. Maybe they are those who worship on Saturday. . .or Saturday  night. Maybe they have today’s sermons playing on their audio system. Or, they are just not into this thing we do on Sunday morning and evening all over the Country.

I am sadden by that. I know some Churches are just not interesting enough to attract a crowd, and some have been so mean over the  years no one wants to get involved. But mostly the reality is that people don’t feel the need, or see the value of gathering with the family of God for Worship, fellowship, the sharing of llove, and the warmth of good friends gathered together.

It’s either their fault for not trying, or wasting the opportunity, or being careless with their lives, or it is our fault that we don’t create the environment that people want and need to be part of more than they want to be part of whatever it is they are headed for.

I know most of the members of our Church are not here. I wonder. . .is it them – or us?

I guess you have to say “them.” Ultimately they will be held accountable for themselves. And I guess you can say “Us” as we will be held accountable for ourselves.
