Thought For The Day

Oh, I Get This All Right!

Sometimes one just understands the “news.” I have been heard to say, “I just don’t get it.” But this story, this narrative of “lost and found,” I understand.

Los Angeles (AFP) – US experts are scratching their heads after finding a more than 130-year-old Wild West rifle leaning against a Juniper tree in a remote area of a national park. The Winchester Model 1873 firearm was found in Great Basin National Park in Nevada by a park employee, Eva Jensen, who happened to be working in the area with an archaeology team. Exposed for years to the elements, the rifle’s cracked wood stock was “weathered to gray,” while the brown rusted barrel “blended into the colors of the old Juniper tree,” officials said. Tucked into a remote rocky outcrop, the rifle appeared to have remained “hidden for many years,” they added in a statement. The gun’s serial number indicates that it was made and shipped in 1882. But beyond that it remains a mystery. “Who left the rifle? When and why was it leaned against the tree? And why was it never retrieved?”

I can hear old Slim’s wife now, that afternoon when he wandered in from a long hunting trip to supply food for the family. “Whadda’ mean you lost your gun? Where’d  you put it? Did you just toss it down and walk away? When you finished dressin’ the deer, did you just head on home without checking your scabbard? That gun cost a lot of hard earned money! I swear, Slim, I have to take care of you like a child. Don’t expect you’re going to get any of my egg money for a new one!”

When I get to Heaven I am absolutely confident our Father will fix my memory. Lost gun, keys, jacket, water bottle, hat, gloves, tickets, deposit slips, money, glasses, I-Pad, phone. . .will be no more. And the lovely bride won’t be nagging me any more about the lost stuff.

Heaven is gonna’ be great!!
