Thought For The Day

Orthodoxy be Damned

The Presidential election coming in November is critical. Orthodox (orthos: right or true; doxa: opinion) thinking is being pitched out like used bath water.  A statement made by Carrie Brown in POLITICO sums it up fairly well in my thinking.

But that misty, glittery terrain is precisely the ground on which [some] have chosen to wage the 2008 presidential election. It is a choice freighted with risks. It depends on winning, over the next ten weeks, many Americans whom polls show are reluctant to embrace a movement that places its faith in intangible qualities — charisma, vision, capacity for growth — rather than in such prosaic traits as national experience or long-term identification with a policy agenda.”

I am reminded of the “emergent” church movement. Discard the Cross of Christ, repentance, new birth, Heaven and Hell, and just begin a casual journey “following Jesus” until you, hopefully, arrive at some heaven on Earth.

I am not going to abandon the Truth a lot of years of learning from those who have gone before affords me. I won’t get sucked into the vortex of popularity, hyperbole, or mysticism. These are fundamental matters and deserve critical consideration. I’ve had my fill of Gospel and Presidential Lite.
