Thought For The Day

Keep ’em Laughing!

I think it is important that we be informed politically, even though my taking a public stand for one candidate or the other is not germane to my subject. I was watching the Democrat Convention last evening and heard part of the speech by the Montana Governor. The Rocky Mountain News put it this way:

“Sporting his Western bolo over an open-necked shirt and blazer, his big face basking in the bright lights, Schweitzer brought the crowd to its feet numerous times with punch lines – written to guarantee a partisan cheer but delivered with the aplomb of a stand-up comic.”

Unfortunately, I saw a lot of comparison to modern “preaching.” The problem lies in the fact that in this matter of electing Presidents of the United States of America, and in proclaiming the matchless, incomparable, inspired Word of God, we don’t need cheerleaders and comics, we need people who approach the critical issues facing our Nation from a serious perspective, and Spirit-driven men who recognize the infinite, impending danger to those to whom the righteousness of Christ has yet to be imputed.

Our preacher doesn’t tell many jokes, and never expects to hear a cheer (though sometimes that might be appropriate). Proclaiming the Truth is deadly serious; life and death hang in the balance. And so it is with this Presidential election in 2008; the direction of our Nation is at stake.  If we don’t get America on the right track, well    . . .only God knows what the future holds. If we don’t get the Truth right, the future is abundantly clear.
