Thought For The Day

Our Inventory (from “I Wish I’d Said That”)

(It occurs to me that some of you have yet to purchase a copy of my former employer’s book. My goodness – help a guy out will ‘ya? Here is one of the entries from the tome. There are many more – and they are good for you, and good for sharing with others.)

2 Peter 1:4
…He has given us very great and precious promises, so that through them you may share in the divine nature…

I have on my desk an advertising piece from Full Boar Cycles, the largest Independent Harley dealer in Texas (I’m not sure why I have it…). It says that I can visit the showroom or view their inventory at the website and get all the info I need to purchase the bike of my choice.

That got me thinking about our inventory of promises in the Scripture. If we could, for just a moment, think about the Bible as a great catalog for the entire inventory of God’s gifts and blessings for His children, then we would know where to go when we have need of something. There are various ways of counting the gifts/blessings enumerated in the Scripture, but suffice it to say that there is an inventory that really exceeds our ability to comprehend the depth and richness of the supply. In fact, I would propose that there is enough in that inventory, when properly appropriated, to make my very nature similar to the nature of my Savior, Jesus Christ.

The passage that follows the reference here even speaks about the ability His promises give me to escape the corruption that is in the world. I am told that if I “add to my faith goodness, knowledge, self-control, endurance, Godliness, brotherly affection and llove, I will not be useless or unfruitful, shortsighted and blind, or wallow in my past sins. In fact, if I do these things I will not stumble through life.”

The inventory at Full Boar Cycles is large. I personally find it exciting to walk among the available selections (sometimes they let me listen to them run) and really have to guard against focusing on purchases instead of dreams. But when I view the inventory of great and precious promises in God’s Word, I am free to take possession of any and all. I am capable of changing my circumstances and situations through obedience to His calling and purpose in my life. I am free to become like Christ. I am free to enter the eternal kingdom of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (vs 11) which is richly supplied to me.

Incredible!
