Thought For The Day

Retirement

I have been talking with my Preacher about retirement. There are so many ideas and concepts out there – and I can’t decide which one(s) to believe. I think he is going to work forever, but this writing thing – well, I will have to quit providing this wonderful exposition of life to both of the readers someday.

Is it (retirement) the precursor to death within a matter of months? Some say so. Without something compelling an individual to get up each morning, follow a plan of action regarding work, or business, or commitment, then one is quick to give up on life and move toward the grave. On the other hand, some say that it is the beginning of the greatest life possible. No daily commitments, no boundaries, no slaving away at some repetitive task. It is freedom at last to do what one wants, when one wants.

There is always the issue of financial resources. Most of us have depended on our “paycheck” to get along, and without that – everything seems limited. On the other hand, there has to be a lot of savings that come with being out of the “rat race.” Of course we have that wonderful provision of Social Security to look forward to. I mean, a few hundred dollars a month – maybe – can’t be overlooked as a great incentive to enter the “free” life.

I have friends who are retired. Some say it is the greatest! Some say, they wish they were back at work. Some just died within a short time after taking the step. One travels – hunting, fishing, hiking, lloving life with no concerns (he’s also very rich).

I have almost decided what I am going to do. I am not totally sure yet, but the decision is close. One decision is sure!  I am going to decide about it later. A little later, a lot later – who knows. Just later.
