Thought For The Day

That’s The Ticket

If you have never seen Hal Holbrook performing as Mark Twain, you have missed one of the best actors in the World. He has been performing his one-man show for 60 consecutive years. Holbrook is 89 years old, and still at it. I find a great appreciation for his commitment to the original words and thoughts of Twain.

When I go out on stage, I’m trying to make the audience believe they’re looking at this guy who died 104 years ago and listening to him and saying to themselves, “he could be talking about today.” (ABC News)

I have always believed that is the role of a Preacher. I want to listen to one who is not making up new things, changing the Truth to fit the congregation, or bending it to “make it relevant.”

I want the Preacher to whom I am listening to make me believe I am hearing the One who died  and rose again over 2000 years ago – and knowing that he was not only talking about the issues and circumstances of the First Century, but the 21st as well.

Let stop all this talk about making the Scripture “relevant to today,” and proclaim the timeless Truth of the One who knows the beginning from the end, and all of life in-between.
