Thought For The Day

The Book

First up on ABC News’ “5 Things To Know Today” was a reminder about the popular social media site:

The Facebook you see now is almost unrecognizable compared to the version that debuted ten years ago today. Even the name is different. The social network was officially called “The Facebook” until 2005.

There are a lot (a euphemism for “I have no idea how many”) of people who spend a lot (another euphemism for “I have no idea how much”) time on the Facebook social site. Our Church has a presence there (hardly anyone knows that). As a way of communicating with some people who are there, mostly about thing that are not critical, I have a Facebook account. I try not to spend more than a few minutes a week even fooling with the fool thing. Sometimes it can be a few moments of fun, and I often laugh at what I see there (I need more laughter in my life).

There is another Face Book of course. And it is no laughing matter. Unfortunately it is a Face Book that is not nearly so popular.

James, the older half-brother of our Lord, wrote about the comparison between looking at one’s face in a mirror, and forgetting what one looks like, with looking less than obediently into this Book to see who we really are, and subsequently failing to practice the Truth found therein.

James puts it this way – “The one who look intently into the perfect law of freedom [the Book, the Word of God] and perseveres in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer who acts – this person will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:25)

Maybe you will want to consider your time with Facebook in comparison to your face time in The Book. I’m sure the latter is best.
