Thought For The Day

The First Church Service?

Here’s a bit of a “stretch,” but, well, I kinda like the thought.

Matthew (first book of the New Testament) tells us that  “wise men” came to Bethlehem subsequent to the birth of Jesus.  He tells us that a “star” led them to the place where the “child” (note: this does not connote “baby.” Jesus may have been nearing two (2) years of age when the wise men came) was in a house somewhere in Bethlehem. Could that have been the first “Church house?” Look at the information given — see what you think.

Entering the house, they saw the child (God incarnate in that house) with Mary His mother, and falling to their knees (the rightful place of worship) they worshipped Him. Then they opened their treasures and presented Him with gifts (one might say “offerings”): gold, frankincense, and myrrh.” (Matthew2:11)

Verse 12 tells us the wise men received a message from God regarding their return to their own country.

So there you have it: A house where God was present (which is always the case when Believers gather; in this case Mary and the wise men), and people Worshipped the Lord of Heaven and Earth (right on), an offering was given (which is also a part of Worship), and a message came from God (not true in all houses of worship, but ought to be) that directed the lives of wise men. Now, if that is not a Church service, I don’t know what is. And – if you’re worried about the singing, well – don’t be. It’s OK to not sing, though I do prefer some of that as well.

Hope you are focusing on the Savior during these days.
