Thought For The Day

Voter ID

Once again I find myself failing to understand how requiring one to have a photo ID to vote is disenfranchising “hundred of thousands of people.”

“The greatest threat to public confidence in elections in this case is the prospect of enforcing a purposefully discriminatory law, one that likely imposes an unconstitutional poll tax and risks denying the right to vote to hundreds of thousands of eligible voters,” Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg wrote for herself and Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor.” (Bloomberg)

Photo ID’s are prevalent in all of society as far as I can tell. Personally (and perhaps I am the only one and therefore the subject of discrimination) I find I need a photo ID to do my banking, drive my car, visit the local jail, purchase stuff with a credit card, write a check, get a job, prove my age (I am not usually “carded” for being too young, but sometimes people don’t believe I am old enough to get the senior discount – no, really), renew my DL or my CHL. There are other things as well, but I won’t bore you any more.

Seems to me our Government would want to know (silly me) that the person voting is the person who says they are who they are and that they are eligible to vote.

I can think of one place where you won’t need a photo ID, if it gives you any comfort. When you die – and face the infinite God of Heaven and Earth. The Scripture says “the Lord knows those who are His” (2 Timothy 2:19). He will recognize you right away. You might also notice that He won’t wait until you get to the last judgment to know you. The Psalmist said:

Lord, you have searched  me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I stand up; You understand my thoughts from far away. You observe my travels and my rest; You are aware of all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue You know all about it, Lord. You have encircled me; You have placed Your hand on me. This extraordinary knowledge is beyond me. It is lofty; I am unable to reach it. (Psalm 139:1-6)
