Banished Words

There are many words in the English language that ought to be banished. I can imagine that any of us would like to be on the team that picks the words which go away. I won’t burden you with my choices, other than to say I would appreciate it if everyone would learn to use the words “like” and “you know” less than several times in every sentence. Like, you know what I mean?

For 40 years in a row, the LSSU-Nation folks at Lake Superior State University have been curating a cra-cra list of “Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Misuse, Overuse and General Uselessness.” (Forbes)

Here are some of the words they have selected for 2015:

  • Polar Vortex
  • Hack
  • Skill Set
  • Swag
  • Foodie
  • Curate
  • Friend-raising
  • Enhanced Interrogation
  • Takeaway

Be that as it may (ha, ha, ha), there are a few words that I think may be near to banishment in the Church of Jesus Christ in 2015. It will be difficult for those who are Believers to function as God designed without these words – clear and accurate – in the life of the Church:

Obedience, Holiness, Faithfulness, Discipline, Commitment, Purpose, and, of course, LLOVE (for which most people need a clear and accurate definition)

The best way to keep these words from disappearing from the life of the Church is for every Believer to put them into daily action in their life. We can do this!
