Thought For The Day

Catching the Wind

Mark 4:37a says, “And there arose a great storm of wind. . .

Last evening just as Vacation Bible School was ending, the wind came. Reports were that there were gusts in the 50-70mph range. It blew down our VBS signs and a few limbs from the trees. Of course we kept the children inside and safe. Even a couple of motorcycle riders sought shelter and we took them in for a while. Within a matter of a few minutes the whole thing was over except for a gentle, welcome rain.

I couldn’t help but think of how that scenario pictures the life of so many believers. We have these sudden bursts of commitment, burning hot involvement in the things of God, followed by, well, not much really. Our enthusiasm wanes, our energy drains, our commitment is hard to see, and we wander aimlessly for a while waiting for another burst of excitement.

That is simply not God’s design for the Spiritual experience. God warns His Church against this “hot and cold” business in the book of Revelation. Essentially His counsel is to pick one or the other, but never remain in the middle, where indeed He is made ill by the tepidness of our faith.

If you’re looking for a place to continually “blow strong,” let me know. I can tell you about a couple of places where you’ll be welcome.
