Thought For The Day

National Day of Prayer

Thursday, May 7th, is the National Day of Prayer. I will be meeting with the Ministerial Alliance led prayer meeting at the City Hall in a small East Texas town.

I wonder what is expected as a result of such meetings taking place all over our Country. I know one thing for sure. One day of prayer (or more likely one hour or less) will not make a significant change in our society. Many who come to such meetings to “pray” are not even related to the Father to whom the prayer is addressed. If my words sound negative, I apologize. It’s just that prayer is designed to be a constant, continuing, family thing, and planning a yearly “day” of prayer isn’t all that impressive in my thinking.

Franklin Graham said, in relationships to this day of prayer:

It can be tempting to believe that America has reached a point of no return. While these factors cause despair, we are reminded in Scripture that with God, nothing is impossible. No problem is too great for Him. Seasons of distress and uncertainty and hardship call for faithful, fervent prayer by God’s people and remind us of our responsibility to humble ourselves before Almighty God. We cannot expect healing to come to our nation apart from obedience to God through His Holy Word.

The Truth is, it is his (Mr. Graham’s) final words that speak the Truth our Nation must hear, and God’s children must obey, if we are to be turned from our imminent destiny with judgment. God’s people (as Mr. Graham says) must discover the faithful, fervent practice of daily prayer and absolute obedience to the Word of God. (See 2 Chronicles 7:14 – note: my people, called by my name; and note: seek, and turn.)

Everything else is just window dressing.
