Thought For The Day

Treasure in Heaven

I never ceased to be amazed how True the Truth of Scripture is, and how quickly it makes itself understandable to all of us. The Pastor of our Church advised me his office was broken into overnight and some things were stolen. I assured him it must be entirely his fault since he still has glass windows!

In any case he figured I would want to write about it. So, here is my take.

Even the things we set aside to be used for the work of the Kingdom, computers for office work printing and publishing, or the few gift cards we keep on hand to provide benevolence for the needy, or a couple of dollars from the coke machine, are tempting to the thieves of this world. That’s why Jesus said, in Matthew 6:19-21, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there  you heart will be also.”

We can easily repair the broken window, and we will replace the items lost. What we cannot do is help the individual (since we don’t know [yet] who it was) who stole from God’s people and from those with genuine need that the benevolence fund might have helped. That person is obviously laying up (or perhaps using up the treasure of others) treasures on Earth, or trying too, by violating the very Truth that would provide for his/her eternal security.

It begs the question – “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his soul?” (Mark 8:36)

We’re not angry, or fearful, or broken over this incident. It’s just that our goal and desire is to give so much (from a spiritual perspective) to every individual who sets foot on our campus, and now someone has come and taken so little. I wish we could meet with that individual (in the light of day, perhaps) and make another stab at getting this right.
