Thought For The Day

Trouble in Paradise

A couple of years ago my bride and I, along with one of our best friends, stood only a few hundred yards from Kilauea and watched the smoke, barely perceptible, rise from the crater.

(PAHOA, Hawaii) — A new fissure in Hawaii’s Puna District sent gases and lava exploding into the air on Sunday, spurring officials to call for more evacuations as residents waited for a possible major eruption at Kilauea volcano’s summit. Hawaii County Civil Defense issued an emergency cellphone alert after the fissure was discovered early Sunday morning. The agency said one “unidentified structure” was destroyed by the new vent, bringing the total number of homes and other buildings lost to the lava to nearly 40. (TIME)

We have walked the hills and meadows around Mt. Saint Helens (Washington) in the last few years and watched the 1980’s eruption is healed day by day – never again to be the same – and growing beautiful again after incredible destruction.

I am hopeful that Kilauea will not be the next to rain destruction on the beautiful islands of Hawaii.

One day, of course, the entirety of the Earth will know such destruction. How (except that the “elements will melt with a fervent heat”) and when are not given to us, but the reality of it’s damage will end life on this Planet. Then God will create a “new Heaven and a new Earth,” (see Revelation 21:1ff), where those who are part of the family of God will dwell with Him forever.

Seeing the pictures of the interior of Kilauea’s fissures makes me think of those coming days, and fear that those who have not found the saving grace of God will spend eternity separated from Him who lloved us all enough to provide redemption free for the asking (see Ephesians 2:8-9).

If you are not familiar with the “Gospel,” find a Church near you that proclaims the Scripture with clarity and accuracy (let me know if I can help you find one).

Your eternal life depends on it!
