Thought For The Day

Who’s Listening

Maybe the President of the United States and most preachers I know have some things in common. They both talk a lot, and truthfully, both sometimes say a lot of stuff that doesn’t make a bit of difference in the real world. Obviously they talk about different things, but both talk about things that affect real life, a real future, and  some real problems.

How many people are there in the United States? About 313.9 million. How many people in  your local Church? Let’s say 2-300. So how many are listening? Well, we know for sure as far as the President is concerned:

The other point of context for this year’s State of the Union is that the overall audience shrank.Bloomberg added up the numbers and it figures Obama’s total audience was about 31 million viewers. (Christian Science Monitor)

So approximately 282 million people were not listening. Did they not know it was time for the SOTU address? Did they not care? Does it matter?

On any given Sunday a preacher can be happy with 50% of the congregation in attendance. So 100-150 members are not listening. Do they not know it is Sunday? Do they not care? Does it matter?
